Thomas Werner

Thomas Raymond Werner, MD, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a respected leader in the field of psychiatry, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the age of 90. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Mary Ann, his loving daughters Kirsten (Walfredo) de los Reyes and Ingrid Werner, and his cherished grandson, Thomas James Werner. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Eric Thomas Werner.

Dr. Werner’s life reflected a remarkable balance of family devotion, professional excellence, and service to others. He pursued academic distinction early, graduating First Honors from St. Xavier High School (1949–1953), earning a BS Magna Cum Laude from Xavier University in 1957, and receiving his Medical Doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1961. He continued his training through an internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami (1961–1962), followed by a residency in Psychiatry (1962–1964) and a fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine (1964–1965) at the University of Cincinnati.

Dr. Werner proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1965–1967, practicing psychiatry at Malcolm Grove Hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

A distinguished physician, educator, and leader, Dr. Werner dedicated nearly five decades to advancing the practice of psychiatry, improving patient care, and strengthening medical institutions. He served on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine—ultimately as Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry—and led both the Psychosomatic Medicine Unit and Psychiatry Consultation Service at University Hospital. His commitment to excellence extended to private practice in adult and geriatric psychiatry and later to pivotal leadership roles, including Director of Psychiatry at The Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati (1987–1989) and Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs there (1989–1999), overseeing medical staff performance, clinical quality, residency programs, and patient care standards. From 1987–2004, he also served as a Psychiatric Hospital Surveyor for HCFA/CMS.

He was a Board-Certified Psychiatrist (1970) and a trusted consultant to federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Defense, HCFA administrative law judges, and CHAMPUS. His peers honored him throughout his career with leadership positions, including President of the Ohio Psychiatric Association, President of the Medical Staff of Good Samaritan Hospital, President of the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati, and President of the Cincinnati Joint Council on Geriatric Care. In 1978, he was named a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Werner will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity and his love of thoughtful discourse. A lifelong learner with a particular passion for history, he had a gift for elevating conversations—engaging others with insight, perspective, and a desire to understand the world more deeply. His ability to exchange ideas with both rigor and respect left a lasting impression on colleagues, friends, and family.

Those who knew him will remember a man of steady integrity, sharp intellect, and unwavering commitment—to his patients, his profession, and most importantly, his family. His legacy endures not only through the countless lives he influenced, but also in the values he instilled: character, service, and the pursuit of knowledge with purpose.

A funeral Mass for Dr. Werner will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at St. Paul Church in Florence, Kentucky at 11:00am. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Dr. Werner’s memory through donations to Blood Cancer United (formerly Leukemia & Lymphoma Society).
