Robert Bernard Hensley, 102 years of age, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family members on May 3, 2013. Mr. Hensley was married to Dorothy Curry Hensley, his beloved wife and true partner of 64 years. Dorothy was the love of his life( until her death in 2002). He is survived by his beloved 6 children, Mary McKay (Robert), Jeanne Guller, (Walt), Rick Hensley (Debbie), Tim Hensley, Deborah Humphries (Craig), and Stephen Hensley (Debra). Mr. Hensley had 19 Grandchildren and 24 Great grandchildren, Robert is also survived by his sister, Mary Jean Poston. His eldest son, Robert B. Hensley II, preceded his Father in death( 2011). Infant son, Michael C. Hensley, died in 1960. Born May 1, 1911, Mr. Hensley grew up in Burlington, KY and attended the University of Kentucky. We celebrate his life and feel it was an honor to call Robert our Dad, Pa , great grandpa, and friend. Mr. Hensley was a graduate of UK Law School (1936). A decorated U.S. Army-Air Force WWII veteran, Hensley was a member of the 444th Bomber Group, 54th Wing. He served from 1942 to 1946 in the BCI theatre. He was released from the military with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Hensley’s political career spanned decades working for public servants using grass roots campaigns in support of the KY Democratic Party. His Business history spanned many decades. Highlights include: Acting Chairman & Director of the KY Commonwealth Unemployment Compensation Commission, General Counsel for the KY Coal Association, organized, VP and General Counsel for Green River Steel Corporation, partner in the law firm of Hensley & Logan, and founder, CEO, and President of Life Insurance of KY. Mr. Hensley was also committed to and served on many charitable, educational and civic boards ; Kentuckiana Children’s Home, Catherine Spalding College, Eastern KY University, FFA, the Boy Scouts of America, and Chairman to the Alliance for Progress for the State of KY were among his proudest achievements. Mr. Hensley, a true KY Colonel, was a was a long time member of the Louisville Pendennis Club, and, an enthusiastic fan of both UK basketball and Notre Dame football. He proudly served as co-founder and a life member of The Louisville Prayer Breakfast group which continues strong. Mr. Hensley surviving sister is Mrs. Mary Jean Poston of Burlington, KY; his late sisters and brother, Elizabeth Mills, Marjorie Hensley Thomas Hensley preceded Robert in death. Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 12AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Burlington, KY with burial at Burling Cemetery in Burlington, Ky. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Activities Center at Thompson Hood Veteran’s Center,100 Veterans Dr. Wilmore, KY 40390.
