Rev. Cahill “A True Rebel”

Rev. John Cahill was a Thomas More “Rebel”,  Even though the school may have changed the name from Thomas More Rebels to Thomas More Saints (to please someone), it was an honor and a pleasure to know one of the many true ” Thomas More Rebels.”

I first met Rev, Cahill in 1976 as a freshman at Thomas More College. He taught Philosophy and was the Chaplain of the College.  Rev. Cahill was a great comfort to many students that were great successes and those who may have been struggling.  He was compassionate when others were not, and he was outspoken for those who were in need of a voice, a true Thomas More Rebel.

His career with the Diocese of Covington was that of a Rebel.  After leaving Thomas More College he was assigned to the Neumann Center at Northern Kentucky University, and then later took on a new challenge, Rector of the Basilica of Covington.  When Rev. Cahill arrived in Covington the enrollment was at an all-time low, and the Cathedral was in need of major renovations. .  Rev, Cahill watched over a major renovation of the Cathedral and during this same time and new heart beat was developing at the Cathedral:   the Spanish Community.  Rev. Cahill went on to transfer to Erlanger Kentucky and develop, the Cristo Rey Congregation when others within the Diocese wanted no part of the Spanish congregation.
Last year I had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam with Rev.  Cahill.  He was consistently involved in Peace and Justice for many years throughout his life, with many more travels locally, and through South and Central America at a time when no one dare travel to those areas.

Rev. Cahill will be missed for his integrity, while challenging our thoughts, our ideas and our actions.  Rev. Cahill was a true Rebel.
