Nancy Daly died suddenly on October 21, 2024 at the age of 70 at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a year-long effort to recover mobility after her hip deteriorated resulting in nursing home care. Nancy, an Army Brat, was born at Letterman Army Hospital in the Presidio, San Francisco, CA. Her childhood was spent in Virginia, Texas, Kansas, Massachusetts, Germany and Kentucky. She was an active child dedicated to the Girl Scouts, softball (as a left-handed pitcher) and volunteering as a candy striper. She graduated from Henry Clay High School in Lexington and the University of Kentucky with a journalism degree.

Nancy, who was an accomplished guitarist and singer, who often led her 6 siblings in folk music concerts at her parent’s parties, combined her love of music and writing in her early career as a freelance music critic specializing in bluegrass music and following the early careers of such legends as Ricky Skaggs and Jerry Douglas. Nancy embarked on a long and creative career as a reporter, photographer and editor with the Somerset Commonwealth Journal, Community Press, Community Recorder, and the Cincinnati Enquirer where she retired in 2019. At the Enquirer, Nancy was a leader in the development of digital media and social engagement.

Nancy was a breast cancer survivor. In her retirement, as a fierce advocate for local journalism, she continued to freelance for the Soapbox and Northern Kentucky Thrives. She was also able to act on her lifelong interest and love of politics as a Delegate to 2020 Democratic National Convention from Kentucky

Nancy was predeceased by parents Lt. Col (Ret) Hugh F. Daly Jr and Helen M. Daly (nee Breen), and brother, James P. Daly. She is survived by siblings Mary E. Daly (New York City), Sheila J. Daly (Erlanger), Kathy A. Daly (Whitcham, England), Eileen M. Daly (London, England), and Hugh F. “Trey” Daly (Chicago) and nieces / nephews Patrick Whitton, Sean Whitton, Hannah Daly, Maya Daly, Desmond Daly and Griffin Daly.

Tribute to Nancy Daly

I was a fellow journalist with Nancy as we worked several years together at the Community Recorder/Press and always found her an encouraging individual to everyone around her as we strived to get out accurate information to the Northern Kentucky-Cincinnati area. She will be missed by all of us who planned and reported on the news.
