Kenneth “Kenny” Vaught

Obituary
Condolences

Kenneth “Kenny” Karl Vaught, 70, of Florence, KY, passed away on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence.

Born on May 10, 1955, to the late William and Shirley Vaught, Kenny was a proud longtime resident of Boone County, KY. Even though he was born in Somerset, KY and lived various times in Georgetown, KY and Findley, OH, after retirement from Marathon Oil, Kenny returned to his “home” in Florence, KY.

Kenny was a 1973 graduate of Boone County High School, where he was a multiple time class president and lettered in football.

After graduating from Northern Kentucky University, Kenny began his career in education, teaching social studies and serving as dean of boys at Newport Middle School, where he also coached football. Driven by a passion for justice and public service, he went on to earn his law degree from Chase Law School in 1985 and became a practicing attorney. His career included roles with LexisNexus and Marathon Oil.

Deeply rooted in his community, Kenny was a member of the First Church of Christ and served on the Boone County Planning and Zoning Commission. He cared deeply about the place he called home.

Kenny had a rich love for life and family. He was especially a fan of youth and high school football where he volunteered as a coach and avidly followed his son, Brady’s career.  He was a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds, and UK athletics.  He relished trips to Mecum Auto Auctions.

He had a great appreciation for music and was especially devoted to the Beach Boys and Elvis – whose concerts he attended. The Doors and The Eagles were also just a few of his favorites.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Shirley; grandchildren, Gemma Bray and Aidan Wagner; and fur baby, Buddy.

Kenny is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Julie Vaught; children: Jessica (Scott) Bray, Karly (Gregory) Raper and Brady Vaught; stepdaughters, Amanda (Brian) Myers and Allie (Charlie) Ramshaw; grandchildren: Macie and Beau Bray, Archer and Jocelyn Myers, Charlie Jr., Hudson and Maxwell Ranshaw; sister, Donna (Bob) Edwards; sister-in-law, Mary (Rick) Baker and children, Joshua, Dave and Bill; brother-in-law, Pat (Carol) Keedy; niece, Amanda (Andrew) Hawkins and son, Ethan; nephew, Jason (Emily) Edwards and children, Mary, Kate and Will.; niece, Mary Sweet Branmstedt and her children, Kassia and Jacob; grand dogs: Rocky, Bentley, Boss and Leo; as well as other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral service, 12:00 PM, at First Church of Christ, 6080 Camp Ernst Rd., Burlington, KY 41005, with burial to follow at Union-Rice Cemetery in Union, KY.

Condolences

Kenny’s Family – I just learned of Kenny’s passing and I am so sorry to hear this news. I worked with Kenny way back in Customer Service at LexisNexis. He and a few other colleagues were some pranksters and I was the target on many occasions – oh so many fun memories. We also played softball together at LN on the Diamond Dawgs team! He was a great guy – funny, kind, smart, family focused and such an Elvis fan for sure. My heart and many prayers goes out to his family. — Brenda Flynn

Remembering Ken

Julie and family,
I just learned of Ken’s passing this morning. What a shock it was to me and , I’m sure, to you too. I met him in freshman comp at Northern Kentucky University in 1973. He was best friends with Kevin, Brian and Jeff, who went to the military academy in Annapolis. I remember passing them on the steps, where Ken introduced me to Kevin. They had a bet going about whether he would ask me out. Kevin did ask me out and we dated all through college and married in 1979.
Their friendship remained strong even though they were separated by distance. Ken moved to Ohio and we moved to Harrodsburg, Kentucky. Brian worked for Ashland Oil and moved many times through the years. After his service, Jeff moved to the Atlanta area. In 1995 I lost Kevin to cancer. We have all stayed in touch through the years and Jeff messaged me this morning about Ken. My heart is so very sad today, as I know yours is as well. I pray Ken was a believer and that he and Kevin are having a wonderful reunion in heaven. I believe that love and friendship are some of the most powerful forces on the planet and theirs will continue on.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and , had I known, I would have been there to tell you in person.

Always my brother

We have been brothers for life. Ken was always there for me as I was for him. The remaining years will not be the same without him.

I will look forward to seeing him again.
