Jim Simon

James F. Simon, 84, passed away peacefully at his home on January 3, 2026, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.

Jim’s cancer journey was filled with miracles. Most patients diagnosed with his type of cancer survive less than a year, yet Jim defied the odds and was blessed with just over three years—many of them high-quality months spent creating cherished memories with his family.

Jim was born on February 15, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, and later moved to Northern Kentucky, where he was raised by his parents, Harold and Flossie Simon. He was the second oldest of four siblings—Joe, Betty, Harold, and Bev—all of whom preceded him in death.

Jim is survived by Judy Simon, his loving wife of 45 years. He was also a devoted father to his children Missi (Tony) Corona, Jim (Krisy) Rains, Steve Rains, Tony (Jill) Rademaker, Sally (Bobby) Gentile, Bonnie Rademaker, Amy (Bryon) Given, and his beloved son Timmy, who preceded him in death. Jim was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, with a tenth arriving this month. While some of Jim’s children were stepchildren, he never made that distinction—he loved them all as his own. Family meant everything to Jim, and making others feel loved came naturally to him.

Jim is also survived by his beloved grand dogs, many extended family members, and countless friends whose lives he touched in lasting ways.

Jim worked for C&O, B&O, & CSX railroad for 35 years before retiring. He enjoyed several hobbies, including bowling and golfing. Though he liked to say he wasn’t a good golfer, he loved the game. His true passion, however, was bowling. Jim spent many years bowling at LaRu Lanes and Walt’s Center Lanes, and he proudly bowled one perfect game—earning his coveted 300 Ring.

Another passion of Jim’s was Halloween. Anyone who knew him knew he loved to make people laugh, often through his wildly creative costumes. Every Halloween season, fellow bowlers eagerly awaited what Jim would show up dressed as—often bowling the entire night in costume. His joy was contagious.

Jim also bled Big Blue. He was a devoted University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball fan and could almost always be found wearing UK gear. He loved sports and could recite play-by-play details and statistics—whether you asked or not.

Above all, Jim had a servant’s heart. He was always ready to help—moving, painting, driving kids and their friends, or lending a hand in countless other ways. Jim completed coursework to become a Hospice Volunteer and proudly earned his badge shortly before his cancer diagnosis. Though illness limited how much he was able to serve, his desire to help others during life’s most difficult transition speaks volumes about the man he was.

Jim’s big blue eyes, warm smile, and infectious laugh will be forever remembered. He was truly one of a kind and will be deeply missed.

Honoring his wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 1:00–6:00 PM at the Villa Hills Civic Club, 729 Rogers Rd., Villa Hills, KY 41017.
Words of Remembrance will take place from 1:30–2:30 PM, followed by a reception with food and spirits. Jim requested that guests wear UK blue or apparel from their favorite sports team—no formalwear, please.
