Grace Johnson
Grace Marion Coggins Johnson whose fingers so elegantly graced a piano most of the days of her life, joined Our heavenly Father on Friday May 25, 2012. She was 89.
Grace was a native New Yorker and grew up surrounded by a large family, consisting of her brothers George and Fred and her sisters, Pearl and Ida. Grace grew up under the influence of the church, as an adult, both in New York and after moving to Kentucky in the mid 90’s, Grace spent much of her time teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Her love for imparting education did not stop there; Grace was also a piano instructor and had several students with whom she kept in contact with long after their lessons stopped.
Grace was a graduate at the age of 17 from the All Girls High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was a member of the girls basketball team. Grace’s athleticism didn’t end there, later in life she enjoyed tennis, and bowling and once she bowled a perfect game! Grace married Ralph Arnold Johnson in 1944 and their love story was captured via letters as he went off to WWII the day after their wedding. Upon his return they lived in Brooklyn, then moved to Huntington Station, Long Island
Grace’s proudest moments in life would be the births of her three children by whom she is survived, her two sons Dr. Ralph Johnson (Terry), of New Albany, Ohio and Kenneth Johnson (Karen)of Orange, FL., and her daughter Grace Hanser (Ray) of Erlanger, Kentucky.
Grace was the proud grandmother of three granddaughters, Aubrey Feldhaus(Scott) of Crittenden, KY; Elizabeth Miller (Jeremy) of Florence, KY; and Brittany Johnson of Port Orange, FL. Her pride and joy are four Great-Grandchildren; Isabell and Samuel Miller of Florence, KY and Ailey and Piper Feldhaus of Crittenden, KY.
Before relocating to Kentucky, Grace was a red flower in the Men’s department of Macy’s Walt Whitman on Long Island, New York where she retired after 25 years of exemplary service.
There was not a day that went by that Grace did not consult her Bible, play the piano, send out well wishes through cards and prayers for her friends and family. In her later years Grace enjoyed working puzzles with her friends and the company of her great grandchildren. Grace’s final days were spent with her family, her dear friend Tom, and the loving staff at Rosedale Manor in Covington, Kentucky.
Visitation will be held Thursday May 31, 2012 at Linneman Funeral Home in Erlanger, Kentucky from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. A service will follow at 12:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow immediately at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Memorial donations are suggested to: Rosedale Manor, 4250 Glenn Avenue, Covington, KY 41015.
