Tributes
Garry O. Hanson, age 98, of Florence, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on January 24, 1928, and lived a long, full life marked by service, curiosity, devotion, and quiet joy.
At just 17 years old, Garry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1945 to 1949 during World War II. He was stationed as an arms instructor at Quantico, Virginia, an experience that helped shape the discipline, professionalism, and confidence that would define much of his life.
Before his enlistment, Garry met the love of his life, Nona. They would not see each other for two years while he served, but when they reunited, they danced all night—and Garry knew she was the woman he would marry. They were wed on September 3, 1949, beginning a partnership rooted in love, resilience, and deep companionship.
Together, Garry and Nona endured the heartbreak of losing their infant son, Gary Lee Hanson, in 1951. They later welcomed their daughter Andrea in 1952 and their son David in 1956. Garry was a devoted father and a steady provider, deeply involved in his children’s lives. He attended athletic events, dance recitals, and extracurricular activities with pride. While he wasn’t always the strict disciplinarian, he was often the one the kids went to when they needed a “yes,” a listening ear, or quiet encouragement.
Garry was a lifelong learner with an inventive mind. He earned a chemistry degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, through the GI Bill, later completing his engineering degree. Additionally, Garry went on to work on his MS at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. His professional career reflected his passion for research and development. He worked as a chemical engineer with Ansul Company in Marinette, Wisconsin, and later with Lennox, where he served as Manager of Research & Development and co-invented the Pulse-Gas Fired Furnace. He continued innovating at Williamson Heating and Air Conditioning in Norwood, Ohio, contributing to the Pulse-Oil Fired Unit. After leaving Williamson Heating and Air Conditioning he was self-employed as an Engineering Consultant for several years. Research was Garry’s niche, he loved thinking outside the box and solving complex problems.
Outside of work, Garry embraced life fully. He loved the outdoors, especially deer hunting in Wilson, Michigan, where he had a cabin in the Upper Peninsula, as well as duck and pheasant hunting and fishing for walleye. He was an accomplished runner, ranking #1 in Cincinnati during his 70s, and treasured running 5Ks alongside his son David. He also enjoyed poetry, with several of his poems published over the years.
A licensed private pilot, Garry had a daring spirit in the air and was affectionately known as the “Evil Knievel” of flying. He once aspired to be the oldest pilot ever, until he could no longer pass the physical—and until Nona gently gave him a choice between her and the plane.
In retirement, Garry worked alongside his son David and son-in-law Len for nearly 17 years, valuing the time together as much as the work itself. He also cherished quieter moments, sitting on the front porch of his cabin on 26 acres in Mt. Olivet, Kentucky, sipping coffee, telling stories, and enjoying the simple beauty of the day.
Garry was known for his sharp mind, remarkable long-term memory, and wonderful sense of humor. Whether through jokes, playful pranks, or storytelling, he brought laughter to those around him. He also enjoyed a good Manhattan, two a day, in recent years. Always with moderation and appreciation.
A longtime member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Garry lived his faith through service, humility, and love for family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Bessie Hanson; his beloved wife, Nona Hanson; his son, Gary Lee Hanson; and his sister, Diane Iverson.
He is survived by his daughter, Andrea (Len) Hegna; his son, David (Mary Anne) Hanson; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Brett, Trent, and Erik; and his great-grandchildren, Macey, Justin, and Jaxon.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, with a funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. Garry will be laid to rest at Highland Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky.
