Dr. Wiley Rufus Smith, Jr.
Dr. W. Rufus Smith, Jr., 91, loving husband, father and grandfather of Crestview Hills, KY passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood with family at bedside. Rufus was an accomplished Child Psychiatrist, a member of Westwood First Presbyterian Church Cincinnati, OH, and member of the Crestview Hills Park Club. He is survived by his loving children, Margaret Ellen Smith, Philip Rufus (Marg) Smith, Mary “Libby” Elizabeth Jackson and Alex (Dianne) Lockstead. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Robert Jackson, Dana Jackson, Dillon Lockstead, Nicholas Lockstead, and Tonya Turner, great grandchildren, Harley Redd and Kiona (Xavier) Jimenez, great-great grandchild, William Jimenez and numerous family and friends. Rufus was preceded in death by his wife, Pamela K. Smith earlier this year on May 25, 2018 and his brother, William Osburn Smith. ‘Rufe’ was born January 26, 1927 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He enlisted in the Navy after high school graduation, 1945. He eventually went to medical school at Tulane University and graduated June, 1952. He attended the school of aviation medicine in Pensacola, Florida, and was a senior flight surgeon. He was discharged and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio for a general residency in Psychiatry at UC Medical Center in 1960, and then a 2-year fellowship in Child Psychiatry. His professional career spanned over 50 years until his ‘retirement’ December, 2012, a month shy of his 85th birthday. He was an instructor at UCMC in Psychiatry, private practice, President of the Cincinnati Psychiatric Association, Medical Consulting. He attained the rank of Associate Clinical Professor at UCMC and was given the honor of “Distinguished Life Fellow” in the American Psychiatric Association. He met the ‘love of his life’ Pamela in the early 1970’s, and they married in 1980. The life that he and she shared was one of love, passion, friendship, and partnership. They traveled the world, played bridge/golf, cooked and entertained in their home and danced together. They both said that they were ‘it’, and neither one wanted to outlive the other. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 from 9am to 10am at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, KY with funeral services to follow at 10am.
