Damian Kevin Stanton lived 63 years of life dedicated to family, faith, and acts of service. Damian had 4 decades in law enforcement with the City of Florence and the Kenton County Sheriffs Office. He fought for justice in his community and gave back to the less fortunate, including baking pastries for the homeless. He spent the last 18 years of his life with Sandra (nee Luken) Stanton who helped expand his horizons in experiences, travel, and openness. They shared a strong Catholic faith, and he lent his photography skills to the Diocese of Covington. He raised three children with Deborah Schaffer: Autumn (wife of James Ruehl), Katherine (wife of Todd Spille), and Matthew Stanton. Together with his children, they ran marathons, 10Ks, and went on long distance bike rides. He grew into a strong relationship with Sandra’s daughter, Katherine (wife of Jonathan McGee). He was the dear brother to Thaddeus (husband of Sue Pennington) and Terry (wife of Mark VonBokern). He loved to care for his grandchildren: Josiah, Damian, and Winter (Ruehl), Hayley (Spille), and DeDe and Ignatius (McGee), which included trips to his lake house and the Cincinnati Zoo. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose Stanton; and his dear friends, Al and Hilda Shinkle, and Reverand Louis Jasper. Visitation will be on Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 5PM-8PM at Linnemann Funeral Homes in Erlanger, KY. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 10:00AM at St. Barbara Catholic Church 4042 Turkeyfoot Rd. Erlanger, KY 41018. My Sympathy

I just learned of Damian’s passing and am sorry to have missed his service. I worked with Damian for more than 20 years while with the Florence Police Department. He reached out to me and made me feel welcome from the very beginning. When my husband and I adopted our first child, Damian offered his assistance and support. He lifted my spirits when I was going through breast cancer — once bringing our entire shift (3rd) unannounced to my home at 10:30 at night — each officer in his cruiser with blue lights flashing just to make me laugh! A couple of years back, we crossed paths and he told me of his plans to retire in the near future. I heard all about the family of which he was so proud. Typical of Damian, he invited me to use the lake house and borrow his boat. Not too long ago, I saw Kate. She told me that her dad was enjoying retirement and loved having time with the grandchildren. I am so sorry that he could not have had more time with all of you.

I’m sorry for your loss Sandy

Sandy, I am very sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you. David Meisner.

On the Loss of a Brother

To further expand on my brother Thad’s entry, I want to share an example of Kev’s caring kindness.

He was concerned that response time to his and Sandy’s beloved lakehouse could be a problem in an emergency. He purchased his own AED to have available if needed. He told me that he made sure it would have pads “suitable for the Grandkids.” Such a caring protector who gave unselfishly to all who know him.

He protected this little sister and I ask all to keep his memories alive, especially for his Grandchildren.

As Mark and I share our sorrow with all family and friends, we also have faith in the Risen Lord that we will meet again.

My Sympathy

Sandy, I’m so sorry to hear of your husband’s death. A death, especially a sudden one, is hard. But, hopefully, your memories and faith will bring you strength.
A New Hope friend,
Gayle Jimenez

On the Loss of a Brother

I am the older brother of Damian Kevin.

When Kev was 4 or 5 years old, his favorite toy was a stuffed bear. Not a Teddy Bear, but a “Smokey the Bear”. He would walk around the house, holding up Smokey and repeating “Remember, kids, only you can prevent forest fires”. At the time, I was a mature 8 year old. I thought he was a little weird, and a lot annoying. Now, looking backwards, I see that as the beginning of Damian’s life dedicated to helping others, to caring about others, to protecting others.

It has been said, “The greatest gift is a gift of yourself”. Damian gave continuously and unconditionally. His life was tragically short, but beautifully lived. I am proud to have had him as a brother and a role model.

On behalf of Sue and myself, I send our condolences to Sandy, Terri, Autumn, Kate, and Matt.

Thad Stanton

Deepest Sympathy

I was shocked to learned of Kevin’s passing. I recently reconnected with him on facebook and learned about the wonderful life he has led. He was actively involved with his community and really made a difference! He was happy and in love with his wife, Sandy. His children and grandchildren brought him so much joy! His life was too short. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him! Prayers for all of his family, brothers, sisters, cousins, etc. as they cope with this loss.

Deepest Sympathy For An Old Friend

I just learned of Damian’s passing and since I live in Florida, I am sad to miss his service. I worked with Damian for many years at the Florence Police Department and I had such great respect for him as a truly dedicated professional. Service and protection to the community was his main goal as a police officer and he maintained that goal both on and off duty every day. My sympathy and prayers for his family. The community has lost a loyal guardian. – Ken Stephens
