Barbara A. O’Connor
Barbara A. O’Connor passed away on December 7, 2020, just days shy of her 89th birthday. Some say it was a grandiose attempt to avoid yet another performance of A Christmas Carol. Barb was predeceased in life by her devoted husband (James “Jim” R. O’Connor) and curious cats (Chessie and Alex). Barb was a pioneer feminist, learned actuary, and American Mensa Member, admitted in 1966. But her genius was utterly surpassed by her sharp sarcastic wit and unbridled philanthropy. Barb spent her retirement years volunteering at Legal Aid of the Bluegrass, where she assisted with public benefits counseling and ran the phone line. She was not fond of cooking but was skilled at winning over colleagues with her daily offering of grocery-bought pecan roll pastries. Barb came to work every day with determination… snow, rain, or shine; routinely embarrassing those with paychecks, who sheepishly cited “hazardous road conditions” for reason of their absence. Barb passionately supported and treasured the arts. She loved animals (what will the birds eat this winter?), reading, candy, and cherished time spent with her dear friend Jane McBreen. Barb’s quick humor remained sharp through her final days. Just recently, upon being shown a newspaper ad for Macy’s, reading, “Entire Store on Sale!” Barb dryly quipped, “I guess there will be no more Macy’s, the whole store is for sale.” The world is a better place for Barb’s generous spirit. Her friends and family will toast her memory for years to come. Of course, with unoaked chardonnay, only.
