Scott, Sarah, Sam and Family,
We are heartbroken over the loss of our dear, dear friend, but we are lifted by the courage and dignity Salle summoned as she faced this horrible disease. Her joie de vivre was inspirational! We so enjoyed our lingering dinners and happy hours with Salle and Scott, debating current events, education, the arts, and family issues. We loved sharing her handmade book insights, and I thoroughly enjoyed her observations in Book Club. I will never forget our last visit with S & S in their front yard on a beautiful September afternoon, looking over her book collection, sipping water, and sharing stories. How poignant it is that the last time I saw her was this past Tuesday evening when I picked up some books she was donating to my poetry students. She texted me and said, ” If I’m awake, wave at me.” She was awake and I did wave and we shared a virtual hug through the window. Please know that we share your grief and that you all are in our hearts and prayers. We lit a candle for her after Mass. We will never forget her spirit.
