Our beautiful angel, Sophia Kappen, earned her wings at the tender age of 6 years old, when she died in the arms of her parents, Greg and Amy, on April 5, 2017 after an intense one-year battle with cancer.
Sophia was a kindergartner at Longbranch Elementary school in Boone County, KY even though her cancer prevented her from attending this school year. Sophia loved to learn and enjoyed being read to, but she loved the social aspects of attending school more than anything. She made friends everywhere she went. Sophia wanted to be a veterinarian when she grew up to make pets feel better who in turn would make people feel better.
She had many passions in life that included gymnastics, bike riding, family walks, camping, makeup and shoes. She loved to watch youtube videos to learn how to make crafts and view surprise toys. Sophia loved to help her mommy bake dishes in the kitchen as well as work on motorized vehicles with her daddy. There wasn’t anything Sophia couldn’t do if she put her mind to it.
Sophia was a fun-loving sister to her big brother, Niko, and her twin brother, Finn. Together, they were Team Kappen. Sophia had many friends, but shared a special connection with her best friend forever, Charli Grubbs. The two would swap shoes and clothes ever since a very young age. Their bond was truly magical. Sophia created memories with mermaids on her Make-A-Wish trip, including swimming with a mermaid tail after losing the ability to walk during her battle with cancer.
Sophia was a princess warrior who touched many lives throughout her journey and raised awareness for pediatric cancer throughout not only her community and school, but across the nation. Sophia was a true pioneer in numerous cancer treatments and warmed the hearts of many nurses and doctors along the way.
Sophia is survived by her parents, Greg and Amy Kappen and her two brothers, Niko and Finn, of Florence, KY. Her grandparents, Ferdinand and Walburga Kappen of Edgewood, KY, Patricia Plamondon of Windsor Locks, CT and John and Barbara Plamondon of Crane Lakes, FL. Her aunts and uncles, Sandy and Dave Shamblin of Fort Wright, KY, John Plamondon of West Hartford, CT and Lori and Brandon Calavan of Windsor, CT. Sophia had an incredible bond with her cousins Noah and Aidan Plamondon and Brooke and Caroline Calavan. Sophia is also survived by many great uncles, aunts, cousins and friends who all loved her.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Sophia’s life at First Church of Christ located at 6080 Camp Ernst Rd, Burlington, KY 41005 on Monday, April 10th at 11:00 AM. Visitation hours will be Sunday, April 9th from 1:00-5:00 PM also at First Church of Christ. Sophia requested not to wear traditional black, but instead to wear colors to celebrate her joy of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering a donation to one of the following:
She was an amazing girl
I know this is..years later. I was a friend of hers, and everytime I see a ribbon, or a mermaid I think of her. She was an amazing girl, sweet, loving, and always there to cheer you up. I was 6 when she passed away, I am 13 now…and I still look at the pictures in the back of my Long branch yearbook.❤

Please read in your Bible at Revelation 21:3,4,5, to see for yourself Gods future promises to mankind.
We’ll never forget you
I never met your sweet Sophia, but through your journal, I came to love her and her sweet, fun-loving spirit. And so smart, too. Words cannot express how sorry we are for your incredible loss. We will continue to pray for healing for you and all of your friends & family.

Comfort
I’m truly sorry for your loss. Although the deep pain that parents feel when they lose a child does not easily disappear, prayer to God can bring real comfort because Jehovah God”is healing the brokenhearted ones, and is binding up their wounds.”(Psalms 147:3)
She’s with God
I did not know your beautiful child. Please find comfort in knowing she’s with God and wouldn’t come back if she could. I’m so sorry for your loss but you can be with her again.

Our prayers & hearts are with you
Amy, Greg, Niko, and Finn,
We are so very sorry for your, and our loss. The world has a lot less joy without Sophia, the incredible warrior, with us.
Sophia is a brave, beautiful, and amazing soul. God, be with Sophia and her family during this difficult and heartbreaking time.
There are no words for such news, or that vindicate her not being here and healthy. It feels so unfair. No child should have to endure such challenges, and no parent should ever have to lay their child to rest. Sophia could have been any of our daughters. Not sure why she had to be chosen to battle so much, but she displayed the strength of a warrior spirit.
I can only imagine how you all are feeling. May your spirits be lifted knowing this special angel is in heaven now, and no longer in pain. As this doesn’t fill the big space she lived with & is now left without her presence, may she always be remembered and honored as the great gal she is. Sophia will always be remembered.
I hope seeing the love around her, and outpouring of care comforts as it can. I pray your pain is eased, and her memory always strong.
She is & always will be a shining example of courage and inspiration. She fought with such dignity. I hope I live with even a quarter of the heart she did, and your family does.
Much sympathies to your family, peace be with you all as much as possible, and infinite condolences for the void in your hearts. We pray you all are comforted as much as possible.
I can’t believe it, and can’t express enough the heartbreak this is. I know you’re crushed, and with good reason. We all are.
As I got to know her when she was a bit younger, and life created other paths for my family and I – we have stayed updated on her status, and your family’s journey. We prayed diligently each day in our home, at church, with groups, and more for healing, and a miracle. We followed respectfully from facebook, the posts, and the blog. This news took our breath away, and can only imagine how you are feeling right now.
While you’re grieving, know you’re heavily on our hearts. Sympathies to you all.
If there’s anything we can do or you need, don’t hesitate to let me know.
With sympathies, and all the shine Sophia filled this world with, and more –
