Catherine “Cathy” Thomas

Catherine “Cathy” Thomas, 57, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Cleveland Clinic.

Cathy was a true warrior. After being diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2019, she faced every challenge with strength and determination, including receiving a double lung transplant in 2023. Her children described her as their hero.

Cathy shared a beautiful life with her high school sweetheart, James. Married for 36 years and together for 39 years, James lovingly called her his queen.

She loved singing along to her favorite music, spending sunny days in Destin and at Disney, and gathering with family for their cherished BYOF (“Bring Your Own Food”) Sunday meals. She enjoyed garage sales, flea markets, everything pink and sparkly, and was always ready to hear the latest gossip and “tea.”

Her beloved dog, Daisy, held a special place in her heart and was often jokingly referred to as her fourth—and favorite—child.

One of Cathy’s greatest blessings was recently becoming a Mamaw, a role she embraced with immense pride and love.

She was preceded in death by her parents, David L. and Beverly Ann Gruber; and brother, John Gruber.

Cathy is survived by her loving husband and best friend, James Thomas; children: Kristen (Mike) Lucas, Jimmy Thomas (Marley Cooper) and Julie (Josh) VanStrien; and granddaughter, Aurora VanStrien.

Per Cathy’s wishes, no services will be held at this time.
