Tributes
Edward “Jeff” Jefferson Aitcheson Sr., age 87, of Erlanger, passed away on May 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on March 1, 1939, in Alexandria, Virginia, Jeff lived a life defined by faith, family, service, education, and unwavering kindness.
Jeff was born to Tracy and Madeline Aitcheson (née Millan) and carried throughout his life the values of hard work, compassion, and humility that shaped him from a young age. His strong work ethic began early, delivering newspapers at just eight years old. Over the years, he worked in grocery stores, local florists, and for the Navy while attending college. He earned his master’s degree and went on to build a long and fulfilling career as an electrical engineer with AT&T Bell Laboratories. Jeff loved learning, solving problems, and using his mind to help others. His work allowed him to travel both nationally and internationally, experiences he greatly treasured. He remained with AT&T Bell Labs until his retirement at age 50, taking immense pride in providing for his family and in the meaningful career he built.
While living in Alexandria, Virginia, Jeff met the love of his life, Jane Phillips. The two married in 1961 while he was in college, beginning a beautiful partnership that lasted 64 devoted years. Together they started their family in Trenton, New Jersey where he earned his master’s degree. AT&T Bell Labs then relocated them to Naperville, Illinois where they became deeply rooted in both church and community life.
Jeff’s Catholic faith was the foundation of his life. At Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville, Illinois, he served faithfully as an usher, extraordinary minister, and teacher of the faith alongside his wife, especially to members of the special needs community. After retiring and moving to Erlanger, Kentucky, to be closer to their grandchildren, Jeff continued his service at St. Henry Catholic Church. There, he helped coordinate Masses and communion services at the Village of Erlanger and spent cherished time reading to students at St. Henry Catholic School. His faith was not only something he practiced, but something he lived every day through service, generosity, and love for others.
Jeff cared deeply about his community and believed strongly in giving back. Encouraged by AT&T Bell Labs to serve others, he judged science fairs at inner-city Chicago schools and taught rocket-building minicourses at Beebe Elementary School. He found joy in helping young people learn and discover their potential. Education remained one of his lifelong passions, and he was involved in numerous academic associations throughout his life. He loved to teach, to learn, and to share knowledge with anyone eager to listen.
Family was at the center of Jeff’s world. He was heavily involved in his children’s lives, coaching his son Jeff’s baseball teams for many years before serving as equipment manager. Having played baseball himself as a child, he proudly passed down his love of the game. He enjoyed watching his daughter, Melissa, play soccer and cheer. Not only did he endlessly support his cherished children but dedicated himself to the success of others. He became a familiar and beloved face in the community where many local children fondly remember seeing him sell pumpkins during the Pumpkin Festival and reading to the elementary children in the St. Henry Library.
Beyond his many accomplishments and acts of service, Jeff will be remembered most for the simple joys he shared with those he loved. He cherished family camping trips, motorcycle rides, evenings spent getting root beer at A&W, and trips for ice cream with his children. He loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. Whether helping someone in need, offering wisdom, or simply sharing a laugh, Jeff made everyone around him feel cared for and valued.
Jeff is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jane Aitcheson (née Phillips); his daughter, Melissa (Daniel) Schlake; his grandchildren; Alexander Schlake, Jacob Schlake, and Ashlyn Schlake, and Edward Aitcheson III; his brothers, Larry Aitcheson and Donald (Kathy) Aitcheson; his sister in law, Judy Aitcheson, wife of the late Tracy Aitcheson, along with many extended family members, dear friends, and community members whose lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved son, Edward Jefferson Aitcheson Jr. “Jeff”; his brother Tracy Aitcheson; and his sister-in-law Marianne Aitcheson, wife of Larry.
A visitation will be held at St. Henry Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026, from 10am to 11am with a funeral mass beginning at 11am. Burial to follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
The family asks that memorial donations be made to St. Henry Grade School Tuition Assistance Program, a cause that reflects Jeff’s lifelong devotion to faith, education, and children. Donations can be mailed to St. Henry Parish, 3813 Dixie Hwy, Elsmere, KY 41018.
