An Important Person in my Life

To Carl’s Family,
I wanted to wait a few days for my thoughts to coalesce before I wrote this. I owe so much to Carl. I worked for him and with him at UPS for many years, and so did my Dad (he was a furniture driver). Carl, I believe, pulled a few strings and got me hired. And, like Carl, it was my first and only job. It is said that no man ever is successful on his own. That’s true. I worked at UPS for 38 years, and when I look back on my life and career, Carl played such an important role in it. I probably didn’t realize it until his passing. Carl could be cantankerous at times. I had the unenviable obligation back in 1977 to call him at 6 A.M. or so, to let him know how his drivers did. But I will tell you this – if Carl supported you, he would back you to the hilt. There have been very few managers I have had in my career that I can say that about. So I would like to say, “Thank you, Carl”. You made a difference in my life. And I’m probably not alone.
