Tributes
Thomas Callison passed away on Saturday, March 18th, at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Susan K. Callison for 59 years. Tom was born to Howard and Dorothy Callison on March 6, 1940, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. He grew up in Bippus, Indiana, on the family farm. While living and working on the farm, he learned of his mechanical ability. This inspired him to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in 1962. He began working for the Indiana State Highway Commission immediately after graduation.
In 1965 he started working for the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). During his tenure at NIPSCO, he lived and worked in numerous communities throughout Northwest Indiana. While working full-time, he earned a master’s degree in business from Indiana University in 1977. He served and was very active on many community boards throughout his career. In 2000 he retired from NIPSCO after a successful 35-year career.
In addition to his work for NIPSCO, Tom served in the Indiana Air National Guard in the civil engineering unit. He joined the Air National Guard in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1991 as a Lieutenant Colonel. That area of his life took him and sometimes his family to other parts of the country as he fulfilled his annual two-week obligations as part of his service.
Tom had a dry, witty humor frequently sprinkled with puns and jokes. He enjoyed fishing, photography, hunting, and cooking lavish meals for family and friends. He especially loved surprising co-workers with his cake creations.
Tom is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters Shelley (Tom) Haddigan, Deanna (Ryan) Moon, and Caroline (Bill) Weltzer; his five grandchildren, Lauren Haddigan, Evan Moon, Nathan Moon, Madeline Weltzer, and Morgan Weltzer. He is also survived by his sisters, Susie Latendresse and Patricia Yake.
