Roy A. Lucas
Roy A. Lucas, 77, of Erlanger, KY, passed away on August 26, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Hospice in Edgewood. Roy was a beloved teacher, football coach, and member of Erlanger Baptist Church since 1996. He coached football for over 40 years at Lloyd High School. Miami Trace High School, Morehead State University, West Virginia Technical College, Greenup County High School, Washington Courthouse High School, Newport High School, and Thomas More College. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Jean Lucas. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Beverly Lucas of Erlanger, KY; his sons, Roy (Molly) Lucas Jr. of Independence, KY and Jerry (Ruth) Lucas of Shelbyville, KY; his brother, Jerry Lucas of Florida; and his sister-in-law, Gail Stamper of Lexington, KY. Roy also leaves behind his grandchildren, Neyo, Eli, Abby, JR, and Joe. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 31, 2019 from 9:00AM-12:30PM at Erlanger Baptist Church in Erlanger, KY. Funeral service will be at 1:00PM on Saturday at the Church. Burial at Longview Cemetery in Bath County, KY. A true role model
Roy’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. Roy was a fine coach and teacher. He was my P.E. teacher at Miami Trace High School and I have never forgotten him. He was truly a role model for students. He commanded respect and what a leader he was. I looked up to him and he motivated me to do better. The only regret that I have is never to have played football while he was the coach. Roy was the type of man that this world needs more of. I can’t say enough good things about him. I just ask God to guide you all through these trying and difficult times and I hope someday to see Coach Lucas again.

While watching college football Saturday, I thought of Coach Lucas. Perhaps by persuasion from a Higher Power I googled him to find that on this day he was going home to be with God.
Coach Lucas’s 40 year legacy of teaching and coaching is the numerous lessons he taught so many young people that they were able apply in their grown up life. For me those lessons were leadership, strong work ethic, toughness (physical & mental), passion, and compassion. Thank you Coach Lucas.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Lucas. I had Mrs. Lucas as my 5th grade teacher and I remember him coming into the classroom from time to time. Mr. Lucas would always make up laugh. My heart goes out to the family and I will keep you in my prayers.

The men who have influenced me in my life were my dad, my father in law, and my coaches. This week I lost one of these exceptional people with the death of Coach Roy Lucas. He was my “dad away from home” when I was at Tech.Not only did he teach me as a coach, he also reinforced the positive things all the aforementioned gentlemen shared with me including faith, how to become a good son, and of course a husband and father.
Beyond the discipline when I screwed up, and patience with my sometimes over the top humor at the wrong time was a man consistent with one thing pertaining to all of us, and that was love. His non stop drive to push us to exceed was only overshadowed by how much he cared.That was a choice that he didn’t have to make off the field, but he fully embraced that job with just as much fire and energy, if not more.
Please do not weep for my coach. He has won the biggest game of his life, the one that will never end. I’m sure he is telling one of our departed Golden Bears how to run that last play better while growls at them a little bit with a heart and soul full of eternal joy, and when I see him again, the first thing I’ll say is “Put me in Coach”. Then I will see that wonderful smile and hear “Bob Gobel, five more minutes and you’d have a six thirty”.
Keep coaching them up Roy Lucas. Many more players will need you again someday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Beverly, Roy, Jr. and family, and Jerry and family. We couldn’t ask for better friends, and so thankful that The Lucas family lived in Washington Court House for part of their lives. Our community, schools, and churches were better from having them here.

We will always cherish his friendship, and his loving smile. He was a role model to our boys, and a true friend to Bob and me.
