John “Jack” Corwin
John Grafton Corwin – best known as Jack – of Villa Hills, KY entered eternal life on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at his home at the age of 81.
Originally from Newburgh, NY, Jack was a veteran of the US Navy, where he served on the USS Macon (CA-132) as an electrician and member of The United States Navy Band. During his service, he was deployed throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas.
Upon discharge from the Navy, he attended the University of Kentucky where he met his wife, Carol Anne Keller. He obtained his M.S. in Education from Xavier University, and nearly completed his Doctorate at the University of Cincinnati.
His academic career spanned from teaching at Turkeyfoot Junior High, from being a Guidance Counselor at Holmes High School, to becoming the Regional Director for the NKY Vocational Schools. There, he guided and influenced a multitude of teachers and administrators, and supported thousands of students toward careers that impacted multiple generations throughout our area.
Being a profound lover of music, Jack began his lifelong career in performance by playing trombone in the Newburgh Free Academy Marching Band and continued playing during his Navy years. He then shifted focus to choral music by joining the choir at Immanuel United Methodist Church, singing joyfully for over 52 years, during which he was also a proud member of the NKY Community Chorus. These passions ultimately inspired him to create his own choral group, The Sanity Singers. This dynamic group of men entertained countless audiences for over 15 years.
He also loved to play golf, woodwork, and enjoyed “Burgermeister” outings, Saturday lunches at “the Block”, and dinner and a movie on Fridays with his “crew”.
He will be dearly missed by his loving children and (spouses): Gregory William (Samantha) Corwin, Stephanie Carol (Michael) Brady, Allison Grafton (Syed) Hasan, Michael Jonathan (Michelle) Corwin, and Kelley Marie (Karl) Paulson. Jack’s grandchildren include Greg’s children: Alsatia, Savannah & Atticus; Stephanie’s children: Harper, Caden & Meagan; Allison’s children: Sean, Brooke, Luke, Mitchell & Makayla; Michael’s children: Caitlyn, Ryan & Hailey; and Kelley’s children: Christian, Genevieve, Callister, Flettcher & Cassandra.
Jack is also survived by the mother of his children, and partner and friend in life, Carol Keller Corwin; his brother, George Wesley Corwin; and his many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jack’s parents, George Wellington Corwin, Jr. and Helen Naomi Corwin, and his Sister-in-Law, Joanne Bahn Corwin, have preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held on November 11, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2551 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park, KY 41017.
He will be laid to rest in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, NY, alongside his parents and many of his ancestors dating back to John B. Corwin, born in 1817. The Corwin lineage, of which he was extremely proud, started in the New World when Mathias Corwin landed in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1625.
