James F. Hurst Jr.
Jim Hurst, 90, of Florence, Ky. passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 12, 2017. Jim graduated from Holmes High School and attended the University of Cincinnati. After serving for 3 years in the U.S. Air Force, Jim had a successful 37year career with Procter & Gamble as a packaging engineer in the International Division where he travelled extensively in Europe and South America. Jim’s passion was flying. He was an active member of CCSC Soaring Club for over 50 years. He was a tow pilot, glider instructor, FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, and past president at the Club with over 5000 logged flights. He authored a student manual for flying gliders as well as several other manuscripts and newsletter articles. He enjoyed playing and directing bridge at the Northern KY Bridge Club. He and his wife Betty privately taught bridge as well. Jim also loved music and played the piano and organ. He was a member of Mensa. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Spenlau Ragan. He is survived by his wife, Betty Rust Hurst of 46 years, stepdaughter Patty Poncer Marks (Jim), and grandchildren, Dr. Katherine R. Marks and James Paul Marks III (Sezen). Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday July 18th at Linnemann Funeral Home, 30 Commonwealth Avenue, Erlanger, KY. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery on Wednesday July 19th. Memorial donations may be made to Fort Mitchell Baptist Church or Caesar Creek Youth Soaring Association (CCYSA ) 6193 Marcus Ct, West Chester, Ohio 45069 Attn: Marybeth McManus Checks payable to: CCYSA. Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a lifelong learner and mentor to many. He will be sorely missed.
